The Wall Garden
Malchow Monastery
Wall Garden
SHOW THE TEXT
For a time there was a balcony on the lake side of the south-west wing, which gave direct access to the garden. In old pictures it is evident that the facades were overgrown with ivy for a considerable time.
The outbuilding dates from the period 1722-1730. Many monastery format bricks from the conversion of the refectory were reused here.
In the cause of self-sufficiency, the garden was used by the canonesses to grow fresh vegetables and fruit. When it was redesigned, it was created as a place for visitors of the monastery and museum to enjoy a break.
Wall Garden
After the conversion of the monastery buildings into terraced houses between 1722 and 1730, almost every apartment had an outbuilding and a small garden enclosed by a wall. The outbuildings were used to store firewood and provisions, and probably as a stall for smaller farm animals such as chickens and rabbits, to allow a degree of self-sufficiency.
